Some new work…

Work in Process in August 2025

It kept collapsing!

One of the challenges when doing hand-built firing clay sculpture.

I can throw pots on the wheel, and glazing is a lot of fun! But, I’d rather make ceramic sculpture. So, after some trials and errors, I was fortunate to find out a bit about ceramic sculpture-friendly clay at Bob McCalister’s ceramics hand-building class at sugar-maples-center-for-creative-arts. I have admired Bob’s ceramic masks and animalistic sculpture since I first saw them. We both took classes with Susan Beecher and Susan Bogan in years past.

Flo the Potter is often in that neighborhood, and we also met at the Sugar Maples Art Center. She has had her own uniquely regulated and intentionally unpredictable method of firing her own clay work, with amazing results of color due to studied experimentation. Flo regularly invites the intrepid to join these kiln firings - always a good time stoking the fire for a couple of days. Flo and I collaborated on the completion of this sad raptor (hover over photo above), now quite beautifully solid and blue (hover over photo of fired work). I started the sculpture and Flo finished it - got it to stay together by placing my bird creature in a broken ceramic basket that she had not quite abandon (artists rarely throw out failures they are still learning from).

I was super-thrilled that this raptor piece came out so perfectly, not just unscathed but beautiful. And therefore, this work is attributed to MRose and Flo The Potter. In 2026 I plan to create more ceramic “mad birds”.
